What is ASC Southwest?
ASC (active social club) is an outdoor activity club for adults, and attracts members who like the sound of the activities we offer, along with the opportunity to meet a like-minded group of people. Our fun, laid-back approach to activities and our friendly culture makes each event a very enjoyable one. There are activities for all different levels of fitness and adventure, from short walks to longer, more challenging hikes.
Often people want to try something different, to push boundaries and comfort zones, but can’t find anyone to do it with. That’s where we come in!
Our members comprise people who want to make new friends, and have the company of like-minded people whilst pursuing the activities they enjoy. The common thread through our members is their adventurous spirit and enjoyment of nature and the great outdoors. We ensure everyone feels welcome, and new members quickly forget
their new boy (or girl) status. All ages are welcome. Visitors to the area are also welcome, where a non-membership fee for each activity applies.
What do I get?
Once you become a member, you will have access to membership rates on all of our events, which can be viewed on the website. We can update you as and when new events are added to the calendar.
A fun, varied social life that is organised for you – we do all the hard work so you can relax and enjoy yourself.
Events are competitively priced, and some free activities are included in the calendar where possible.
Members receive discounts on all events.
You will have access to a friendly, fun, like-minded group of individuals, with whom you can commence some unforgettable adventures. We are privileged to live in such a beautiful area, and exploring all it has to offer with a group of friends really enhances the experience.
Do I need a car?
You will need transport to get to the various events. However members may share lifts, and if happy to do so this can be arranged between individuals or via ASC.
Do I have to go on a minimum number of events each month?
No. Simply take a look at our calendar and book on the events that you feel you would enjoy.
How do I join ASC?
You're in luck! We are currently waiving our membership fee, so please disregard the info below. You will pay just the event fee - usually £5 - which is detailed online against each activity, and in our newsletters. Simply email or phone us if you would like to come to an event, so that we know to expect you!
Simply follow the Join link on the website, and follow the simple joining process. All you need is your debit or credit card, and an adventurous spirit.
There is also an option to download a membership form, for completion and sending with a cheque.
Can non-members participate in events?
Visitors to the area are welcome to join in activities, at our non-member rates. We also offer some family activities during the summer holidays at non-member rates – please call the office on 01548 580494 to find out more.
Can I bring a friend?
You are welcome to bring a friend to one activity to see if ASC is for them – they will be charged the non-member rate for their activity.
Public liability insurance
ASC has public liability insurance which covers walks and bike rides. Other more adventurous activities are insured via the individual activity providers, and ASC accepts no liability for these events.
ASC take safety extremely serious. However, these events are undertaken at the risk of the individual.
I've just joined - what do I do next?
Once you’ve joined, take a look at our events calendar – which details events up to 3 months ahead – and book on the events that you feel you would enjoy, and are suited to your fitness level. You will receive a warm welcome, and will quickly feel at ease, ready to enjoy the day!
Will I be fit enough?
We indicate distance, and level of difficulty, for our walks, for you to use as a guide. We look after our group, and regroup regularly, so don’t feel you will get left behind. However, try and choose a distance that you feel comfortable with.
How Do I Cancel My Membership?
You can cancel your membership at any time prior to your next billing date, by email, writing, or by calling 01548 580494.
Are events just for adults?
Mainly adults come to our events, but children with a good level of fitness are also welcome on appropriate events - please email to discuss.
Can I bring my children on events?
As above, children with a good level of fitness are welcome to come on events appropriate to their age and ability. We recognise that many young people have a passion for the outdoors and we want to encourage this. As aforementioned, they must be capable of the activity, to ensure the event can run at it's usual 'pace'.
How do I know what events are coming up?
Our calendar is regularly updated on our website, and events can be viewed and booked on-line. You can request on your membership form that you receive an email when new events are posted on-line.
How do I book events?
You can book on-line via our on-line booking system, paying via Paypal, or download an events form (or request one to be sent to you) and send this to us with a cheque. Or you can pay on the day.
What if I cannot attend an event and need to cancel?
Please see our terms and conditions regarding our cancellation policy.
Do I need special equipment?
You will need the correct attire for our walks, ie a good pair of walking boots/walking sandals, sensible walking clothes, waterproofs, warm layers, and a hat and gloves in the winter. We ask that you do not wear jeans on walks as they can get cold and heavy when wet, and can be uncomfortable. No trainers, please. You will enjoy a walk a whole lot more with the correct gear. Other equipment needed for more adventurous activities are provided by the individual activity providers with whom we work. For horse riding, you will need to wear boots with a small heel and smooth soles.
For cycling events, you will need to bring a helmet and you will not be allowed on the event if you are not wearing it.
Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed.
Most walks start from small country car parks, so do consider car sharing to reduce the number of spaces taken by ASC members and as a consideration to other members of the public using the facilities. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings.
Can I bring my dog?
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome on our walks – we will advise on our event detail if a walk is unsuitable for dogs. However, there is a lot of livestock on our footpaths and moors, and it is essential that dogs are kept under close control.
All of our walking group leaders are experienced and knowledgeable about the area. They are first aid trained and carry a first aid kit and mobile phone.
Our activity providers are fully trained, accredited and carry public liability insurance.
